چکیده

Colloidal particles absorbed at the interface of a liquid droplet arrange into unique packings during slow evaporation [V.N. Manoharan et al., Science 301, 483 (2003)]. We present a numerical and theoretical analysis of the packing selection problem. The selection of a unique packing arises almost entirely from geometrical constraints during the drying.

Inkjet Printing of Colloidal Nanospheres: Engineering the Evaporation-Driven Self-Assembly Process to Form Defined Layer Morphologies

We report on inkjet printing of aqueous colloidal suspensions containing monodisperse silica and/or polystyrene nanosphere particles and a systematic study of the morphology of the deposits as a function of different parameters during inkjet printing and solvent evaporation. The colloidal suspensions act as a model ink for an understanding of layer formation processes and resulting morphologies...

Evaporation-driven Assembly as a Route to Photonic Materials by Robert Gene Shimmin

Evaporation-driven colloidal self-assembly is a promising family of routes to large-area, low-cost, if imperfect, photonic crystals. The simplest example occurs at the surface of a stagnant, evaporating colloidal suspension. For an evaporating colloidal suspension in which the interface falls faster than the particles sediment, particles will accumulate at the solvent-air interface. If neither ...

XXI ICTAM, 15-21 August 2004, Warsaw, Poland EVAPORATION-DRIVEN ASSEMBLY OF COLLOIDAL PARTICLES

In a recent experiment by Manoharan et al. [1], a small number N of spherical particles (diameter of about one micron) located at the surface of an oil droplet self-assemble due to the evaporation of the droplet. Such process leads to final packings of spheres which are unique and, for N ≤ 11, equivalent to the minimal second moment clusters as studied by Sloane et al. [2]. Because such simple ...

Assembly of One-Patch Colloids into Clusters via Emulsion Droplet Evaporation

We study the cluster structures of one-patch colloidal particles generated by droplet evaporation using Monte Carlo simulations. The addition of anisotropic patch-patch interaction between the colloids produces different cluster configurations. We find a well-defined category of sphere packing structures that minimize the second moment of mass distribution when the attractive surface coverage o...

Self-assembly of colloidal particles from evaporating droplets: role of DLVO interactions and proposition of a phase diagram.

The shape of deposits obtained from drying drops containing colloidal particles matters for technologies such as inkjet printing, microelectronics, and bioassay manufacturing. In this work, the formation of deposits during the drying of nanoliter drops containing colloidal particles is investigated experimentally with microscopy and profilometry, and theoretically with an in-house finite-elemen...
